From time to time we conduct 2 day beginners courses on a weekend. They are a perfect opportunity to learn the basic skills necessary for safe and enjoyable wood turning. Whilst there are some excellent wood turning videos available on the internet there are also many that demonstrate unsafe practices. A basic knowledge of wood turning is needed to determine what is safe and what is not.
Participants must be members of the club ($65 annual subscription). Course fee is $120 per participant. Maximum of 14 participants.
Courses are held on an as needs basis with a minimum of 10 students and a maximum of 14, with each student having use of an individual lathe and full use of the clubs tools. Instruction is provided by a team of our experienced and skilled turners.
Topics covered include: Lathe use and safety, basic spindle turning, face plate work, bowl turning & finishing. At the completion of the weekend students will have 4-5 completed items to take away with them.
Currently the cost is $120 for the 2 days and all timber and materials are provided. Membership of Southern Turners is also required, which is presently $65 per year.
